Hello dear Heathershenhouse The overly educated guy with 2 masters degrees who calls a woman fat really isn't all that smart is he? The married professor who hits on the cute student in his class isn't all that smart is he? The at home mom that gives her baby hot sauce while recording her crying isn't all that smart is she? The honors student that get's drunk every weekend isn't all that smart are they? My point here????? Emotional intelligence is more important than academic knowledge, education, or status. If you don't know how to function socially, emotionally, and even mentally, then it doesn't matter how educated, rich, or popular you are..... you will leave destruction everywhere you go and people will get sick of being around you. Emotional intelligence doesn't mean you never have feelings or anger or sadness, it means that you don't allow your feelings to destroy you or others. It means you process your feelings not ignore them. It means you understand that others have feelings too and respect their need to experience them. This is an opportune time to be working on building your emotional strength as well as teaching your kiddos how to be emotionally and mentally resilient! Here are a few tips to do that: - When you feel like crying- cry. It's OK for the kids to see you cry. It gives them permission to feel sad. Show them how you come back from it too with self-soothing.
- Self-soothe- in other words, do what you need to do to feel better..... a scalp massage, quiet time, loud music, a run, meditation or prayer, rub your hands, deep breaths.
- Emotion coach your kiddos- Ex: "It looks like you are feeling sad, would you like to talk about that?"
- Do self-care, NOT self-medicating- drinking, gambling and drugs are all self medicating, NOT self-care. Self-care is not destructive to your body, mind, or spirit. If you aren't sure of the difference, please reach out to me asap.
- Get enough sleep, rest, vitamins, healthy food, sunlight, exercise, and water.
- Volunteer- one of the BEST ways to become emotionally aware!
