5 Pro Tips to SLOW Time DOWN!!! undefined

Hey Heathershenhouse

I've been parenting for 25 years and in exactly 1 month, the 2 youngest graduate high school!

Then....

In just a few short weeks after that, I'll be an empty nester! Holy shit!? Why is time FLYING???

I'm seriously freaking out. It was just yesterday that my oldest daughter Madison was born and now I'm sending my youngest baby Carrie off to college???

Here are a few tips to SLOW down time....

  1. Learn something new. When you're a beginner, time slows because you are so cautious of every step. (Learn more about yourself in Inspired Life School)
  2. Plan something exciting. It always takes forever for that amazing vacation week to arrive.... always have something to look forward to! (Firewalk with me in July?)
  3. Get rid of the clock for a few hours. Go into nature, or a spa, or some place where you can relax and forget about time. Make sure you have no phone or watch so you can lose track of time!
  4. Spend tech-free time with someone. Put away your cell, TV, laptop, etc and spend time with the person you love. (Every Wednesday Carrie and I go out for Mommy / Daughter date day. We shop, eat, laugh, and have silly adventures..... tech free mostly... we do tend to break out the cell for a quick pic of our fun together!)
  5. Ground yourself in the present moment. Turn your brains autopilot off by taking note of the physical things around you. Most of the time you jump in your car and head out without much thought. The next time you drive, notice how the seat feels, notice and touch your mirror, glasses, steering wheel. Say out loud the things you are doing such as "I am setting my GPS for 123 Main St., I am turning my radio to the 80's channel, I am putting my purse on the passengers seat, etc.
  6. Do something challenging... write a book, solve a puzzle, map out your family tree.

You CAN slow time and get more laughs, love, and special moments out of your days! Is time flying by for you?

You might have "empathy bias..."

Hey Heathershenhouse

Having the ability to understand and share the feelings of another is NOT always a good thing.

When I was married to my first husband Donnie, who was (and still is) an alcoholic and drug abuser, I had a serious case of empathy bias.... showing favor for those who are suffering.

Donnie was actually a really kind person but to cope with a horrible childhood, he turned to drugs and alcohol to alleviate his pain at a very young age.

During our brief marriage, I could feel his pain and it was soul crushing. I wanted to alleviate his suffering, so I did whatever I could to try and make things better....

  • I downplayed his drinking
  • I denied his drug abuse completely
  • I didn't reach out for help
  • I'd constantly clean up the messes he made with his friends and family
  • I took responsibility for his bad behavior and mistakes

.... and it only got worse.

Empathy is a beautiful quality until it turns into codependency. Then it hurts both people.

Codependency is when you rely on other people for your own identity so you enable their poor choices, bad behavior and addictions.

I was codependent on Donnie because my identity was reliant upon him getting clean and sober. I lived only to make sure he was OK, and that our marriage appeared successful.

Now, after almost 30 years, 3 kids, education, therapy, and training.... I truly am grateful for my experiences because I get to help so many people in a formal way without losing myself to an unhealthy relationship!

Do you have empathy bias? Is your big heart and desire to help turning into a codependent situation?

Hit reply to this email and let's talk.

You CAN break free from the codependent merry-go-round and find true happiness that isn't reliant on other people..... and life is exquisite when you can enjoy it fully without bearing the weight of the world.

I look forward to hearing from you!
